ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) acquitted a death row convict on Monday after a decade and issued orders that he be let free.
The apex court ruled Mohammad Amir as innocent during a case hearing conducted by a three-member bench headed by Justice AsifSaeedKhosa. In 2006, a case for murder was registered at Chotala police station in Jhelum against Amir – for which he had been serving prison time for the past 10 years.
Four other accused along with Amir had been acquitted by a trial court earlier and the Supreme Court said in its ruling that the other four accused were freed on the basis of testimonies given by certain witnesses. However, Amir was sentenced on the same witnesses’ testimonies.
The court stated that the said witnesses could not be trusted in Amir’s casesince they were proved unreliable in the case of the other four accused.
“The prosecution has failed to present evidence against Amir,”the court said and declared the inmate as innocent and ‘free to go’.
