PESHAWAR: Member of National Assembly (MNA) Shah Jee Gul Afridi, a fervent supporter of the FATA reforms, has received alleged telephone threats from militant organisations to keep away from the agenda.
Talking to BBC, the elected Parliamentarian from Khyber Agency said that he has received telephone threats to keep himself out of the matter.
Afridi declined to name any specific organisation. He said the calls were received through an international number however he is uncertain about the agency or organization behind this.
There are reports that the calls have been made by a militant organisation however Afridi said that he could not confirm the name of the organisation. He stated that, “The caller was speaking in Pashto therefore he could belong to any organisation.”
Afridi said that he has informed the Interior Ministry and other related departments about the incident and they have assured him of providing complete security.
The ardent supporter of FATA reforms, Afridi, had also launched a drive in support of FATA’s merger with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
“The caller said it would be better for me to stay away from the efforts to bring the tribal areas into the mainstream,” Afridi said.
It is pertinent to mention here that the FATA Reforms Bill was to be tabled before the Parliament in May this year. This could not be done due to opposition from Jamiat Ulemae Islam (JU-I) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) Chief Mehmood Khan Achakzai.
Afridi said that he would not be terrified. He vowed that his struggle for the prosperity and reforms of the tribal areas would continue.
