ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan Tuesday lashed out at the ruling party’s lawmakers after they joined hands to thwart the opposition’s bid to stop a disqualified person from becoming the head of his party.
The statement came after the government rejected The Elections (Amendment) Bill, 2017 put forth by Naveed Qamar of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). Minister for Law and Justice Zahid Hamid vehemently opposed the opposition’s move in the National Assembly and recalled that disqualification clauses of Section 5 were inserted in Political Parties Act, 1962 during tenure of Ayub Khan and were expunged by the democratic government of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in 1975, founder of the party that tabled the bill. “Today all PMLN members of the NA should hang their heads in shame for making a farce out of our democracy. They opposed an amendment to the election law, simply to allow NS to remain as head of PMLN despite being disqualified from membership of Parliament under the Constitution,” Imran tweeted.
