ISLAMABAD: The British High Commission launched its campaign to celebrate the 70th anniversary of UK-Pakistan relations at the first-ever Future Leaders Conference at the British High Commissioner’s residence in Islamabad.
With a message of ‘shared history, shared future’ and a hash-tag of #UKPak70, the campaign will consist of a year-long series of activities and events that will celebrate the strength of the UK-Pakistan relationship over the last 70 years. The campaign will also seek to increase trade and cultural links between the two countries.
The Future Leaders Conference was a diversity leadership programme for young people, which debated Pakistan’s soft power and foreign policy for the next ten years. Over the course of five hours, the audience witnessed keynote addresses from British High Commissioner Thomas Drew, and National Assembly Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs Chairman, Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari.
Speaking on the occasion, Thomas Drew said it would be up to the people today – the future leaders – to decide which direction Pakistan heads in the following decades. Meanwhile, talking to journalists, the High Commissioner said that his country was keen to become part of the multi-billion dollar China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project. “It will be [a matter of] great pleasure for us to join the game-changer project.”
