PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Social Welfare and Women Development Senior Minister Sikandar Hayat Khan Sherpao said that the current government is taking measures to improve the implementation of human rights in the province by provision of legal coverage.
The minister called upon the international community to come forward and support the efforts of the provincial government in empowering women, children, special people and senior citizens. He was addressing the inaugural ceremony of ‘Bolo Help Line 0800-22227,’ established for supporting women rights on Thursday.
The occasion was graced by the Australian High Commissioner to Pakistan Margaret, Trocaire Country Director John O Brien, representative of Aiming Change for Tomorrow (ACT) Dina Naz Khattak, KP social welfare parliamentary secretary, officers of social welfare department and a large number of representatives from National and International NGOs.
Sherpao termed the establishment of the Help Line as a fundamental step in providing rights to the women and supporting the victims of human rights abuse. While highlighting the efforts made, the minister stated that legal cover was being provided as per the international requirements, aiming to bring them at par with others.
He said that a survey was being conducted to get a detailed database of victims, special children and senior citizens in the province. He also directed the concerned departments to keep the victims’ information confidential and provide all possible help to them.
Australian High Commissioner, Country Director Trocaire, ACT Chief and others also addressed the occasion and highlighted the importance of the help line while appreciating the government’s efforts.
