ISLAMABAD: With the mercury expected to rise despite the onset of monsoon, the National Institute of Health (NIH) on Friday asked the concerned departments to take immediate measures to prevent and to provide treatment for heatstroke.
According to the NIH, the objective of the advisory was to sensitize healthcare authorities to take timely action and to prepare for and to prevent heatstroke in the wake of escalating temperatures in different parts of the country.
The NIH warned that victims of heatstroke must receive immediate treatment and recommended various measures.
People working under the sun should prevent dehydration and heatstroke by taking time out of the sun and drinking plenty of water or other fluids but should avoid alcohol or caffeine-containing soft drinks or tea, which may exacerbate dehydration.
It advised health authorities to arrange for first aid facilities in case of an emergency situation at prominent points with sufficient essential medical supplies.
