KARACHI: More than 64 main roads, underpasses, flyovers and street roads have developed potholes following the two days of winter rains in Karachi, according to a survey being conducted on the directive of Commissioner Karachi.
The ongoing survey is in the final phase and will ascertain the cost of doing the repair works besides informing the concerned authorities about the rehabilitation work within their respective precincts.
Meanwhile, rehabilitation work of Tariq Road, University Road, Shahrah-e-Faisal, Manghopir Road, Hub River Road and Haws Bay-Manora Road has been started by the Local Government Sindh.
Jahangir Road, Mehran Highway, Rashid Minhas Road, Nishtar Road, Sir Suleman Road, Mauripur Road, Ismail Ibrahim Chundrigar Road, Mai Kolachi Road, Sharah-e-Ibne Sina, Canett, Barnes road, City Court Road, Limarket, Chakiwara, Shairshah Road, Madel Colony, Shah Fasail Colony, Manzoor Colony, Orangi Town, Mehmoodabad, Abul Hassan Isphani Road, North Karachi, Korangi, Landhi, Quaidabad, Sher Shah Suri Road and portions of Shajrah-e-Pakistan remain in poor condition.
The busiest roads in the main markets like Saddar, Garden East and the roads running alongside the under construction Green Line Bus Service from New Karachi to Gurumander have also developed hundreds of potholes.
Similarly roads from Orangi Town to Secondary Education Board Office falling in Orange Bus Line are in poor state.
The Engineering Department of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC is conducting a survey district wise and path-work will be started next week, Shahab Anwer Director General Engineering Department KMC informed daily Times in answer to a querry.
He said under the directives of Waseem Akhtar, his department has been carrying out repair work on these roads in the late hours of the day to minimize the difficulty of commuters.
The residents of different areas are also sending videos of the poor condition which of the roads that are helping the authorities to carryout repair works on such arteries also, he added.
The district chairmen have also been asked to undertake the repair work of roads in their respective districts limits, he said.
The Traffic Police Department has also maintained that due to potholes, traffic flow is badly affected in many areas.
Running of sewerage water on a number of roads and streets in the city is an added nuisance to the agony of the motorists.
The Karachi Water and Sewerage Board and other civic bodies have been already informed about the conditions of roads, according to the traffic police the the KWSB’s management is not paying any attention to their complaints .
Work on sewerage and repair of road on Lucky Star Saddar area being carried out but has no deadline since its on a very slow pace causing severe traffic jams, traffic police claimed.
The 100-day rehabilitation work in city including roads repairs, which was announced in December 2016 by the Mayor seems to be in doldrums, some members of civil society have remarked.
