Gujranwala: Pakistan Peoples Party Information Secretary Sagheer Butt said on Tuesday that the Waste Management Company had failed to clear garbage from streets and roads. The poor state of public hygiene was causing various diseases.
He said all the government machinery had been reserved for making arrangements to welcome Nawaz Sharif in the city during his road trip from Islamabad to Lahore.
He said that because of the lethargic attitude of the authorities concerned most roads and streets remained littered with garbage. He said sanitary staff remained absent from duties and many residential areas were affected as a result.
The PPP leader also accused authorities concerned with affairs in the Waste Management Company of financial embezzlement.
He demanded that a special campaign should be launched to promote public hygiene in the city and to crackdown on corrupt officials.
Separately, the Aam Log Party staged a protest demonstration against municipal corporation authorities. Protesters dumped garbage at the office of Mayor Sheikh Sarwat Ikram.
Speaking at the occasion, Aam Log Party chairman Naseem Sadiq complained that municipal corporation authorities were not working for resolution of people’s problems. The protesters chanted slogans against the mayor and other officers. The protesters dispersed when a police team reached the scene.
Man found hanged: A man was found hanged from a tree at Kangi Wala Gujranwala on Tuesday. The deceased was later identified as Asghar, 35. Sadar police have registered a case and started investigation.
