WASHINGTON: Pakistan ranks 106 among 113 countries in World Justice Project (WJP) Rule of Law Index.
The poll aims to measure the rule of law from the perspective of ordinary citizens including their experiences and perceptions related to government accountability, bribery, corruption, crime, and access to justice.
The report suggests that in comparison to peer countries in South Asia perceptions of accountability are the lowest in Pakistan worse than Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and India.
At least 78 percent of the public pay bribe to officials whereas 74 percent pay it to police. Pakistan stands at a miserable point while punishing the corrupt officers as only 18 percent of them face penalty.
On the other hand, 19 percent Indians, 24 percent Afghans, 42 percent Sri Lankans, 45 percent Bangladeshis and 49 percent Nepalese are punished in corruption cases.
