KARACHI: A local court on Thursday granted bail to Karachi University Professor Dr Riaz Ahmed in a possession of arms case.
The additional and sessions judge (South) granted bail to Dr Riaz against a surety bond of Rs50,000.
Dr Riaz, an associate professor at KU’s Applied Chemistry Department, was arrested by the Rangers on April 1st after a handgun was allegedly found in his possession.
His lawyer, Barrister Salahuddin Ahmed, contended that his client had been implicated in a false case with malafide intentions in order to victimise him for his struggle to release of an elderly teacher, Dr Hasan Zafar Arif, a Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) London leader.
Dr Ahmed was arrested while he was on his way to hold a press conference, calling for the release of Dr Arif.
Dr Mehroze Afroze Murad, a retired KU faculty member, and Naghma Iqtidar, a Democratic Students Federation activist, were also arrested on that day, but were later released.
Police had registered the case against Dr Ahmed under Section 23 (i) A of the Sindh Arms Act, 2013 on the complaint of a Rangers inspector at the Artillery Maidan police station.
