HYDERABAD: For her services towards the cause of human rights in Pakistan, Veeru Kohli received the presidential award on Saturday.
The award was presented to her by President Mamsoon Hussain at the President House. Kohli – after receiving the award – vowed to continue her struggle against the violation of human rights with more passion than before. After returning to Islamabad, Kohli told reporters that she had been working hard for the rights of minorities in Pakistan for more than two decades and this honour was in recognition of those services.
“Receiving the award is an honour not only for me, but for all those oppressed, who suffer the violation of rights, in particular the girls of the minority community who were being forced to change religion,” she said.
She had been raising voice for the oppressed, specifically those in Thar, and would continue her struggle. She opposed the Thar coal project saying that every development project must be beneficial to the people while Thar coal project would displace hundreds of people from their villages and will turn their fertile lands into barren.
