LAHORE: Unidentified persons threw acid on a family who were travelling their way in a car in Jubilee Town of the city on Friday.
A woman, her 12-year-old daughter and eight-year-old son were in transit when they were thrown acid at, according to police reports. The survivors were subsequently shifted to the hospital, while the attackers managed to escape the site.
The woman has put the blame of the malicious attack on her former husband, saying that he got someone to do so over property dispute.
The affected victim has requested for the filing of an FIR in Chohang police station while Punjab IG Captain (retd) Arif Nawaz has brought the notice of the matter under the capital city police officer for a report on the case.
According to the Punjab Commission on the Status of Women (PCSW) , the absence of proper legislation on acid crimes is the main reason accredited for the widespread disease of unabashed acid attacks taking place all over. Furthermore, there is no law to regulate the manufacturing and supply of acids and therefore there is easy access to them, as per the PCSW website.
The Acid Control and Acid Crime Prevention Act, 2011 (Criminal Law Second Amendment Act, 2011) made amendments in Pakistan Penal Code and Criminal Procedure Code to punish perpetrators of acid crimes by clearly including acid crimes in the ambit of the definition of hurt. The definition now extends to include “hurt by dangerous means or substance, including any corrosive substance or acid to be crimes”, as the website reads.
