LAHORE: A 21-year-old girl in Punjab was forcefully married to her 10-year-old cousin for keeping the heredity property within the family.
The girl, identified as Mehwish, was forced by her brothers to tie the knot with her underage cousin Allah Ditta reportedly.
The incident happened in Bhngsika village in the outskirts of the town of Pindi Bhattian.
The villagers expressed dismay over the marriage calling it a “violation of law”.
The incident was not the first of its kind. Various “Child marriage” cases in Pakistan have been reported before.
According to the Punjab Marriage Restraint (Amendment) Act 2015, child marriage is a punishable offense in Pakistan with a minimum sentence of two years.
