ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) on Monday sought the list of all captives in detention centres across the country in missing persons case, while it adjourned the case for three weeks.
A three-judge bench headed by Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan questioned registrar commission of Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances (CIED) regarding the case.
Ejaz Afzal Khan inquired “how does the commission decide whether a person has gone missing due to enforced disappearance or any other reason”, to which the registrar responded that “we are provided reports by various agencies and institutions”.
The registrar added that the CIED (or missing persons comission) has solved upto 3219 cases, to which Justice Ejaz remarked that “your job might have concluded, but the court’s job has not finished yet.” To this end, the CIED representative said that “our job is only to find the missing persons.”
Defence of Human Rights chairperson Amina Masood Janjua complained that on each hearing, “the court keeps on asking basic questions from government officials”. “On each hearing, the court asks about the accusations against the missing individuals”.
Justice Ejaz responded that the court has to collect thorough information about the cases and thus, the court asks such questions.
